Why Queensland Reserves Plumbing for Licence Holders
Queensland runs plumbing on two licence layers: an occupational licence for the person doing the work, and a contractor licence for the business carrying the job. The QBCC issues both.
Each class of work carries its own licence:
- A plumber's licence covers the supply and fixture side of a property, except work needing a separate endorsement.
- A drainer's licence covers the below-ground drainage side, with the same exception for endorsed work.
- Gas work sits on its own licence, and only a licensed gasfitter may install, alter, service or certify a gas system and its pipework. Our gas fitter page covers that side in full.

Who Checks Plumbing Work and What You Receive
Two bodies share the checking: the QBCC licenses the tradespeople and keeps the records for notifiable work, while Brisbane City Council approves new work and inspects it. You can look up any plumber on the QBCC's online registers, and you can also search an address to see if a Form 4 has been filed there.
