Repair or Replace a Tap or Toilet

Repair wins when the fault sits in a washer, cartridge or valve, and replacement wins when the body, cistern or pan is cracked.

A dripping washer tap usually wants its washer renewed or its seat re-cut true. A dripping mixer tap usually needs a new ceramic-disc cartridge, the disc set that controls flow inside a mixer. A running or leaking cistern usually settles once it gets a fresh inlet valve and outlet washer.

Replacement begins where the damage sits in the material itself. A crack through a tap body, a cistern or a pan can't be patched sound again, and a fixture that keeps returning with the same fault often costs less renewed than repaired.

Plenty of Stafford's tapware dates from the 1950s, the decade the Fellowship Baptist Church of Christ on Stafford Road began in a relocated army hut. Brass bodies of that era are usually worth one more repair.

Who Pays for Water a Drip Wastes

No, that water stays on the owner's account. Urban Utilities can apply a concealed leak adjustment after a hidden pipe failure, but the adjustment leaves out anything a leaking tap or running toilet cistern wastes.

A meter check settles any doubt. Read the dial at bedtime with every tap off, then again at sunrise. Overnight movement points to a leak on the property side.

A drip that looks like nothing still pushes litres down the drain every day it runs. The pipes and fittings from the meter to your taps belong to the property, and we repair them.

Unregulated, Minor and Notifiable Plumbing Work

Only a licensed plumber, apart from a short QBCC list of washer-level jobs. Queensland classes a few rubber parts as unregulated work, open to anyone: the jumper valve or washer inside a tap, and a cistern's drop-valve, float-valve and suction-cup rubbers.

Whatever hands do those jobs, the finished work still has to reach the standard the plumbing code sets. Everything else on a tap or toilet stays with a licence.

Repairing or replacing any other tap or toilet fitting is minor work: a QBCC licensee does it, with no permit and no form to lodge. Installing a new toilet, or shifting the existing one, is notifiable work instead.

Council approval isn't needed for that install. The plumber notifies the QBCC on a Form 4 inside ten business days of finishing, and the owner keeps a copy. A straight tap swap needs a licence too, and the QBCC's guide points to that very job when it illustrates what stays licensed.

What WELS Stars and Flow Limits Mean

Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) is the rating scheme for a fixture's water use. Each registered product carries its star rating and consumption on the label. Taps, toilets and cisterns also need WaterMark certification before an install is lawful.

Rentals carry hard numbers, because an owner can only pass the full water account across once the fixtures comply:

  • Indoor cold taps and single mixers: 9 litres per minute or less.
  • Dual-flush cisterns: 6.5 litres on a full flush, 3.5 on a half, averaging 4 litres.

The tap cap reaches indoor cold taps over basins, kitchen sinks and laundry troughs, mixers included. Bath, garden and appliance taps sit outside it.

New houses, townhouses and sole-occupancy units carry minimums: a dual-flush toilet of at least 4 stars, with tap fittings and showerheads at 3 stars or better. Renovations don't trigger those minimums.

Rentals sit thick on the streets around Stafford State School and Queen of Apostles Primary School, so those caps come up on a fair share of our visits.

Tap and Toilet Questions Answered

Call (07) 3523 6417

Which tap and toilet problems can a plumber fix in Stafford?

Nearly all of them. Drips from the spout, handle or base, cisterns that run, leak or fill at a crawl, feeble flushes and tired stop taps all qualify, and each fault has its own page below.

What do WELS stars on a tap or toilet mean?

The stars come from Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS), the scheme that registers a fixture for water efficiency and prints its stars and water use on the label. Taps and toilets also need WaterMark certification before we can install them.

Does the water utility cover a leaking tap or toilet?

No. Urban Utilities can trim a bill after a hidden pipe failure, but a leaking tap or running cistern is excluded, and the owner carries what it wastes. Every pipe past the boundary meter is the owner's side.

What affects the cost of a tap or toilet repair?

The bill turns on the part that failed, the fixture's type, damage to the seat, body or porcelain, and access to the isolation valves. Isolation valves are the small shut-off valves beside each fixture. A fixed quote settles the price once we've seen the job.

Who arranges tap and toilet repairs in a Stafford rental?

Queensland's tenancy rules put repairs on the owner or property manager, and the tenant reports faults as soon as they notice them. A blocked or broken toilet is classed as an emergency repair, so that one can't wait for a routine visit.

Is there a surcharge for a weekend toilet repair in Stafford?

No, there's no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays.
