Tap Repairs in Stafford
Tap repairs in Stafford are among the most booked jobs on our run, and the cure is usually one small part: a washer, an O-ring or a cartridge. A licensed plumber works out which in minutes, and Stafford households get the price in writing before the tap comes apart. We cover leaking tap repair across the whole property, from kitchen mixers to twin-handle sets, alongside the wider tap and toilet plumbing range.

Which Part Fails in Your Tap
Two tap designs seal in different ways, and each fails differently.
The washer type has a separate hot and cold handle and takes several turns to close. A rubber washer riding the spindle presses onto a brass seat inside the body, and that is what shuts off the water. The jumper valve is the small part at the foot of the spindle that carries the washer down onto the valve seat.
A mixer blends hot and cold from a single lever that lifts through a quarter turn. Sealing in a mixer comes from a ceramic disc cartridge rather than a washer, and when those discs wear, the whole cartridge comes out.

Where the Leak Shows and What It Means
A drip from the spout after the tap is fully closed means the sealing end has worn out: washer and seat on the older style, cartridge on a mixer. Where the water shows tells you the part before anyone picks up a spanner.
Around the handle
water appearing there while the tap runs points to the O-ring that seals the spindle.
At the base or under the bench
perished O-rings, a fitting that has come loose, or corrosion splitting the body.
At the spout
washer, seat or cartridge, depending on the design.
Before any part comes out, the water needs isolating. A tap fitted with a small isolation valve under the bench can be shut at that valve alone. A tap with no isolation valve means the stop tap in the meter box has to close the supply, turning clockwise to do so. Check first that no appliance, such as the hot water system, depends on that supply while the water is off.

What Decides Repair or Replace
What the job costs turns on the tap's design, the failed part, seat or body damage, and whether the supply closes at the fixture. Once we've inspected the tap, you get the figure as a fixed quote before any work starts, and doing several taps in one visit changes the arithmetic in your favour.
Repair stops being the answer in three situations:
- the tap body is cracked or heavily corroded;
- the valve seat is scored and chewing up every new washer;
- a fresh set of parts still has not stopped the leak.
Then a new tap is the fix, and the tap replacement page covers choosing and fitting one. Cistern leaks that accompany a dripping tap are a separate fault, and our toilet repairs page takes that job.

Tap Washers, Cartridges and the Licence Line
One tap job sits on the QBCC's unregulated list: swapping the jumper valve or washer, open to any householder with the know-how, though the finished work still has to meet the standards. Every other tap repair belongs to a licensed plumber.
Everything past that washer counts as minor plumbing work under the QBCC's rules, and a licensee does the repair with no permit or Form 4 required. Fitting a brand-new tap is outside the householder's list entirely, and the QBCC's own guide gives a full replacement as its example of licensed work.
Renters have a different path. A leaking tap in a Queensland rental counts as a routine repair rather than an emergency, so once the tenant reports it, the owner or manager arranges the fix in a reasonable timeframe. A Form 11 notice then gives the other side a minimum of seven days to remedy the breach.

Tap Work Across Older Streets
Two tap generations run side by side here. The post-war cottages along Shand Street mostly still carry washer taps with full-size spindles. The units clustered around Stafford City lean on mixers, so a worn cartridge is the everyday job there.
At the last census, 66.6% of the suburb's dwellings were separate houses and 24.2% were flats or apartments. Both repair types stay on the call sheet most weeks, because neither design is going away.

We strip the tap and find the fault
We isolate the water at the tap or the meter, pull the handle and spindle or cartridge, and identify the failed part before touching anything else. Washers, O-rings, jumpers and a spread of cartridges travel on the van, so the repair usually happens on the spot.

Tap Repair Questions Answered
Call (07) 3523 6417Why is my tap still dripping when I turn it off?
Because the part that shuts off the water has worn through. On a washer tap it is the washer or the scored seat it presses onto; on a mixer it is the cartridge, which is replaced whole.
Why does my mixer tap feel stiff to turn?
Usually grit or wear inside the cartridge or spindle. The handle fights you while the tap still seals. The fix is a whole new cartridge, and it has to suit your tap's exact model because sizes differ between makes.
Can I change a tap washer myself in Stafford?
Yes, but only for the jumper valve or washer: the QBCC classes that as unregulated work anyone with the skill may do. The finished job still has to meet the standards, and a whole new tap is licensed work.
Is replacing a ceramic cartridge a licensed job in Stafford?
Yes, a cartridge is not on the QBCC's unregulated list, so the repair counts as minor work by a licensee, needing no permit and no Form 4.
How many litres can a dripping tap waste?
A slow drip wastes thousands of litres as the months go by, and that loss lands on the owner's water bill. Urban Utilities does not treat a leaking tap as a concealed leak for a bill adjustment.
