This page sets out what the work includes, which small jobs stay legal in a home owner's hands, and how a visit runs. The Stafford home page carries our full range, and each room's fine detail sits on its own page below.

Supply, Waste and Traps Under the Bench
Kitchen and laundry plumbing covers the supply lines, waste pipes, traps and appliance connections serving your sink, laundry tub, dishwasher and washing machine. Beneath a typical sink, a hot and a cold line with their own valves feed the tap, and waste water leaves via the basket waste, passes the trap and runs to the drain pipe.
A trap holds a water seal, and that seal stops sewer gas reaching the room. Under the floor, the in-ground private sanitary drain carries waste from each fixture to the sewer connection at the boundary. Your sink and your toilet can both empty into the one drain, because a trap sits under every fixture on the way down.
The laundry set runs to the tub or trough, the taps on the laundry wall that fill the machine, and the waste line away from the tub. Plenty of the quarter-acre blocks here still run on earthenware drains laid through the 1950s boom, so a reno on Windorah Street or anywhere nearby often meets old ground pipework under the new cabinets.

What a Home Owner May Do in These Rooms
Only a short QBCC list of small jobs sits outside licensed hands. The QBCC leaves two of them open to anyone with the knowledge and skill: the washer or jumper valve inside a tap, and the cartridge of a domestic water filter. Both still need to meet the plumbing standards, and a badly seated washer can flood a cupboard as fast as any burst hose.
Everything else in these rooms belongs to licensed plumbers:
- Fixing or swapping out a kitchen or laundry fixture counts as minor work: a QBCC licensee handles it, no permit needed and no Form 4 filed.
- Installing a fresh sink or moving a tub adds up to notifiable work, which the next section explains.
- Everything past those two washer-and-cartridge jobs needs a licence, and ours attend every call.

Valves That Protect Each Appliance
An isolation valve shuts the water to one fixture and leaves every other tap unaffected. A dishwasher and a washing machine each connect through a separate valve or wall tap, so either machine can be closed off while a hose is renewed or while one weeps.
Under the sink, the same valves guard the lines feeding the tap, and a wall tap does the same job for a machine in the laundry. From the post-war cottages along Stafford Road to the units near the shopping centre, we find the same rule everywhere: know where each shut-off sits before a hose lets go.
When no local valve works, the stop tap at the water meter shuts the whole property off, and it closes clockwise. Before shutting the meter, check that nothing on the supply, such as a hot water system, will be left without water. Your water reaches the street mains by way of the reservoirs up on Sparkes Hill, but every pipe on your side of the meter belongs to you as the owner.

Plumbing in a Kitchen Renovation
Notifiable work covers plumbing in a standing building: no council permit applies, but the plumber reports the finished job to the QBCC on a Form 4. A kitchen reno lands in that class, and so does moving a fixture such as a sink.
No permit or inspection applies, and the Form 4 goes to the QBCC inside ten business days of completion. The owner receives a copy, and the QBCC will send a replacement if yours goes missing.
Two exceptions exist:
- A local government permit can apply to an apartment reno, so unit owners check first.
- Adding a fixture where several lots share a drain is permit work, so raise the drain question with your plumber before the design is locked.
Kitchen and Laundry Jobs We Cover in Depth
Stafford Plumbing Services splits the room-by-room detail across two pages, each with its own faults, fittings and process:
Kitchen Sinks
Supply, waste and trap work under the bench:
- new sink installs and replacements
- leak repairs at the tap base and the trap and waste connections
Read the kitchen sink installation page for the full run.
Dishwashers
Connection work for the machine itself:
- supply and waste connections with their own valves
- hose and fitting checks when a machine moves or leaks
The dishwasher installation page covers what a proper connection involves.

Kitchen and Laundry Questions Answered
Call (07) 3523 6417Can my kitchen sink and toilet share the same drain?
Yes, both can empty into the one private drain. Every fixture keeps its own trap, and the shared drain then links your sink, your toilet and every other fixture to the council sewer at the boundary.
What does laundry plumbing include?
The tub or trough itself, the taps on the wall that fill the washing machine, and the waste line that empties the tub. We describe the connections in general terms, and the valves serving the machine belong to the same set.
Do I need a licensed plumber to move my kitchen sink?
Yes, and in Stafford the job belongs to a licensed plumber. Shifting a fixture in a standing building counts as notifiable work, so the plumber files the Form 4 with the QBCC within ten business days of finishing.
Does a kitchen renovation need a council permit in Stafford?
No, a kitchen reno in an existing Stafford house skips the council permit and counts as notifiable work instead. An apartment, or a building whose drain serves several lots, can need a permit, so ask your plumber first.
Where do kitchen and laundry leaks usually start?
At a joint or connection: the waste and trap connections, the base of the tap, the supply fittings and the appliance hoses. Around Stafford's older homes the joints under the laundry tub are often as old as the house, and the sink and dishwasher pages carry the detail.
Is kitchen and laundry work covered by a warranty?
Yes, the work carries our lifetime labour warranty, and the Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee (T&Cs apply) stands behind it as well.
