Reading the Signs of a Failing Mixer

Dripping, cold or lukewarm water, and weak flow are the three signs of a failing mixer. Each fault points at a different part, and the mixer sits behind most of them.

A drip that carries on after the taps shut off comes from the mixer behind the tiles, not the head. A washer past its best or a worn cartridge lets water slip the seal there. A little water draining from the head after a shower is normal.

Cold or lukewarm water points at the cartridge too. The cartridge blends the hot and cold supply, and a worn one can let too much cold through. When the whole house runs cold at every hot tap, the water heater is the suspect, not the shower.

Weak or uneven spray usually starts at the head. Scale furs the spray holes, and a built-in flow restrictor can thin the spray further. A worn cartridge chokes flow as well.

Matching the Fault to the Shower Part

Work back from the outlet and the parts line up: head, arm or rail, hose, then the mixer.

  1. Shower head

the spray end, where scale and restrictors thin the flow. A seep where the head screws onto the arm, seen only mid-shower, means a loose joint or a tired seal.

  2. Shower arm

the pipe from the wall to a fixed head.

  3. Rail and hose

the bar a handheld set slides on, with its flexible hose from the wall outlet.

  4. Mixer cartridge

the mixer's inner part controlling flow and the hot-cold blend. Signs of wear include dripping, a handle gone stiff and water at the wrong temperature.

  5. Diverter

on showers with a bath spout, water running from the spout mid-shower flags a worn diverter.

Exposed parts such as the arm and rail can be reached without opening the wall. A mixer set into the tiling means opening the wall, which changes the job.

What Owners May Fix and What Needs a Plumber

Yes, anyone may swap a shower head: the QBCC classes that swap as unregulated work, though the finished job still has to meet the standards. The arm, the mixer in the wall and the cartridge inside it belong with a licensed plumber instead.

Fixing, renewing or removing a fitting or fixture is minor work. Minor work needs a licensee, but no council permit and no Form 4.

Adding an outlet, or shifting a shower to a new position, lifts the job into notifiable work. A licensed plumber does that work, no council permit is needed, and the Form 4 reaches the QBCC inside ten business days of finishing. The licensed contractor lodges the form, covers its fee, and can pass that cost on to the owner.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement

Replace when wear goes past a washer or cartridge swap, or when an outlet is added or moved. Repair covers everything short of that.

Any shower fitting we install carries WaterMark certification, the approval a product needs before it can legally go on the pipe. Showers, taps and flow controllers also need registration with the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme (WELS), which prints the stars and water use on the box.

Rentals add two rules. A Queensland rental showerhead has to run at 9 litres per minute or less before a landlord can bill the tenant for all water use. On fixtures produced from 2005 onwards, the Residential Tenancies Authority advises checking for at least 3 stars.

Showers Across Stafford's Housing Mix

Stafford's bathrooms span three generations of build. Post-war cottages hold tiling and pipework with decades of wear on them, while area-level figures count 176 dwellings approved across five years, much of it units and townhouses around the shopping centre.

A worn cartridge behind 1950s brick-veneer tiling and a budget mixer in a new townhouse bathroom fail the same way. What changes is the access, and we quote on that before touching a tile.

If the shower is part of a bigger plan, the bathroom renovation plumbing page maps the full sequence. The bathroom plumbing page covers the rest of the room, and a new vanity and basin often rides along with a shower refresh.

Shower Repair Questions Answered

Call (07) 3523 6417

Can a plumber fix my shower in Stafford?

Yes, we repair the fittings: head, arm or rail, hose and mixer. Water escaping the shower recess is a separate job, and our leaking shower repairs page covers that side of it.

Why does my shower head drip when the water is turned off?

The mixer is the culprit, not the head: wear on its washer or cartridge lets water through the seal. A licensed plumber traces the drip and renews the worn part.

How much does it cost to fix a shower?

Cost comes down to which part failed, whether it sits in the open or behind tiles, and how fast the replacement arrives. A new or moved outlet adds a Form 4. We quote the job flat-rate, in writing, before we start.

What causes low shower pressure in Stafford?

On the fitting side: scale blocking the spray holes, a worn mixer cartridge, or a flow restrictor inside the head. Weak flow right through the house points to a separate supply fault, and we trace that on its own.

Do plumbers fix leaking shower walls?

No, not the waterproofing side. A failed waterproof membrane belongs to a separate QBCC licence class, so that work goes to a specialist in the waterproofing trade. We fix the pipes and fittings behind and around the shower.
